AEZ top sailor Markus Wieser within in the top 10 of „Melges 24“World Cup 2012

Hirtenberg, 13th of August 2012. the newcomer of the „Melges 24“ class Markus Wieser, tactician of the AEZ RC44 racing teams achieves his minimal aim, to be within the top 10 at this year's World Cup.

The Gardasee showed its duller side at the beginning of august: with partly extreme rotating Ora (south wind), unpredictable Vento (north wind) and in addition, slump, heat, rain and storms, every condition was represented. At the beginning four groups sailed on the north and south rail, whereby each group had to compete in two races against the other groups. Upon completion of the six races in the group phase, the field was divided into a gold and silver fleet. The gold´s finals race was carried out in the wind secured north course, unfortunately the south course with its silver fleet could not benefit of the Ora all the time, which led to some displacements starts and detentions on the North Course.

The AEZ Team gained attention

Already on the first racing day Melges 24 "newcomer" Markus Wieser (AEZ team Transbunker) gained the full attention due to his victory. "On the first day we sailed on the south course. After a good start we were at the start cross on the right side, and won the race with a big advantage", says the bowman Markus Steinlein. But the rest of the race went with many ups and downs for Wiesner and Co. Six top eight places (1,3,7,7,7,8) also faced the places 16,19,21,32,36.
Bild 2 305Markus Wieser makes his conclusion:" At the end of the successful TP 52 tour in this season, I also wanted to sail with a fast fun boat instead of a slow dragon boat. We had already bought the Melges, when I decided to sail with the Austrian AEZ RC44 Team. Therefore we had less time than originally planned to prepare for the World Cup. To be honest: I thought it would be easier and I underestimated the Italians. The standard of this class is very high, many international top sailors sailed. In order to penetrate the phalanx at the front, we were not fast enough, also our maneuvers were not always like champions. A top ten finish was our minimum target and we achieved it! For next year we have decided to speed up even more! In October 2013 in the next Melges-24WM in San Francisco we will witness a totally different result!"
128 teams from 22 nations mean a new registration record at Melges 24 World Cup at the Italian Gardasee!

For the organizing club "Circolo Vela Torbole" it was a logistical challenge to manage vessels, trailers, tractors and the crew at the clear harbour.
