A giant leap   AEZ RC44 yachtsmen among top 5 – Olympic 470 battle   Wheel manufacturer AEZ has been committed to yachting for many years now, and in many classes at that. And its long-standing support of yachtsmen, women and teams pays off. This is demonstrated by the total score after the RC44 Sweden Cup, having taken place from July 18 to 22, and young yachtswoman Lara Vadlau’s Olympic qualification.   “This is a giant leap for us and we must not get presumptuous now”, says Christian Binder, the “tactician of the 25-knot carbon racing yacht AUT44 AEZ is fielding in the top RC44 Cup. Despite strong winds and a heavy sea – one team even had its mast broken – the team of Rene Mangold, the owner, ranked eighth and thus defended its fifth place in the overall ranking. So their hard work and huge commitment has finally let them end up among the top third.   The RC44 WC is next, taking place from October 3 – 7 at Rovinj (CRO). “The world championship is a new deal and we feel much better off the Croatian coast. We will use the summer interval to prepare ourselves as best we can”, says an optimistic Binder, who thinks that their ranking can still be improved upon.   But now it is the Olympics in London first. After the young AEZ yachtswoman Lara Vadlau already won a gold medal at the 2010 Youth Olympics, the 18-year-old from Austria is now an adult athlete. At the beginning of August, we will see if she and her crewmate Eva-Maria Schimak get a medal. The two girls’ boat is a 4.7 m long and 120 kg heavy 470 dinghy.
