Zajac/Czajka almost made it to Gold Fleet A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush… Thomas Zajac and Thomas Czajka finished the World Championship in Perth, AUS in 28th Place. Entrance into the Gold Fleet was within their reach, but a fumbled qualification day hindered their placement under the best 25, which would have put them in the Gold Finale. A cold weather system shortly before the World Championship ejected the normally prevailing sea breeze conditions. An offshore gusty and extremely inconsistent wind made the conditions in Fremantle extremely selective. “We were able to quickly adjust ourselves to the conditions. We started off well in the World Championship, concentrated and sailed cleanly. Unfortunately we could not see this line through to the end. At the end of the qualification we missed the Tope 25 by only 5 points,” so the Tommy’s said. With solid racing, Zajac/Czajka battled in the finale for a victory in the Silver Fleet. A crash with a Chilean opponent also brought this battle to a quick end. “When we turned the Leegate in the last race in third place, the Chilean boat in front of us immediately capsized. By trying to swerve, our mast was torn from the boat. We had no chance of preventing capsizing. It was annoying because we were well off in the Silver Fleet and had found our system again. Such things happen quickly, if it happens with so little space to spare,” said Thomas Zajac. |

| The Tommy’s starts especially did not function optimally in this World Championship. Therefore, the team was too quickly under pressure and the tactician made mistakes. In the World Cup preparations for the upcoming season Zajac/Czajka will put special attention on this areas. Now the team is looking forward to being home for two weeks before they leave for Miami on January 10, 2012. The Keynote: “We don’t allow ourselves much of a break, we want to show at the start of the World Cup that we can be better. Our first 49er World Championship was very instructive and we know where the levels must be set!” 49er (67 Teams, 15 Races + MR, 1 Leveller) 1. Nathan Outteridge/Ian Jensen AUS 91 2.
