AUSTRIANS PLAYING CATCH-UP Austria’s sailing aces gain a march in the German World Cup. Austria’s squad got a helping of north German weather conditions on the second day of the qualifiers – cold, rain and force three to five winds made for varied and exciting races. Zajac/Czajka want to get back into the Gold group in Kiel. Both of them say, “Our performance in England was OK, but we made life difficult for ourselves with unnecessary mistakes. We know why it almost wasn’t enough to make the top 25 in England. We like Kiel and we’re going to give it our all so it works out this time.” After the broken mast just before the World Cup in Weymouth, England, and a further broken mast because of strong winds, the Tommi and Tommi want to test out a new mast in Kiel. Tomorrow heralds the final rounds, and the results of the Medal Race follow on Wednesday. German World Cup, Standings after Day 2: 49er, 48 Teams, 8 Races 1. Sam Philipps/Will Philipps AUS 22 9.
