RC44 Valencia Cup, 27. July – 01. August 2010

A DIFFICULT FIRST DAY

At the start of the match race determinations before Valencia there is a firm breeze against the AEZ RC44 Sailing Team, Russell Coutts and BMW Racing are leading in the halftime.

The sailing big shot Russell Coutts, Olympia winner, world champion and fourfold crowned AC-champion has two passions. On one hand the organization of the 34. Cup-round which will be held in America and not before 2013, and on the other hand his passion is let out in the Russell Coutts 44 one design class. Around five years ago the most successful sailor of all times realized his vision of a perfect one-design-boat – this carbon monster is America’s Cupper’s youngest generation in small format. Since 2007 the RC44 Championship tour has been doing small time around the globe, the race series are reserved for the best of the best and are guest in the Spanish Valencia for the first time. The second half of the season of the seven stations of the tour has started today with the match race determinations in the third biggest city of Spain where the America’s Cup released a wave of excitement three years ago. Altogether 11 syndicates are at the line; among them the AEZ team Austria, who prefers the fleet race starting this Friday.

The Austrians haven’t almost stood a chance against the other in the duels. At wind speeds of 5 they lost against BMW Oracle team with Russell Coutts, Team Subai (UAE), Team Artemis(SWE) lead by US-superstar Terry Hutchinson, Mascalzone Latino(ITA) and No Way Back(NED). “We were very busy with ourselves today. The wind got stronger constantly, at the end we weren’t used to the conditions on the RC. The other teams have been here for weeks, we have been here only a few days. That’s what made a difference today”, explains AEZ mate Christian Binder.

Trainer Alfred Pelinka’s interim results sound similar. “The conditions were not on our side. Werner Jettmar, who is the trimmer for the first time today with us, was brutally thrown into the water, the start couldn’t have been more difficult. He did very well, but needs a little time to give the team support during strong winds or waves.”

The match race will be finished tomorrow, BMW Oracle is leading in the direct duels with four victories.
