| Bank Sarasin RC 44 Portoroz Cup, 30. September – 03. OCtober 2009 FINAL REPORT Despite extremely strong groups during the match races, technical mishaps with the material during the fleet race series as well as questionable decisions made by the jury Austria´s RC 44 team, sponsored by AEZ, was able to make head against America´s Cup scene at the Bank Sarasin RC 44 Portoroz Cup (SLO) 29.9-3.10. Eleven syndicates kicked off the match race series for the first time in group divisions in Porotoroz, whereupon the Austrians with Dean Barker (Team Artemis), Ray Davies (Team No Way Back) and Russell Coutts ( Team BMW Oracle Racing) got the entire Kiwi connection. Our RC 44 team took over the commandership against Barker, who lead the match race ranking during the tour, but was unlucky due to a penalty. They were also equal for a long time against Coutts, but lost to Spain´s number one, Jose Maria Ponce by a length of a boat. On the first day of the fleet race Austria´s RC44 team had to suffer some losses. During the warm-up an important block was lost; a temporary solution was assembled right before the start. It got even worse in the course of the race, when a tear in the genaker made it impossible to get a good place. Being on 5th place the Austrians had to pass for the rest of the field. Also questionable disqualifications came up and an early start. The satisfaction came on the second day of the fleet race during the long distance race. After 12 sea miles and 90 minutes they came in 6th and sent the Polish AC superstar Karol Jablonski (team Organika) or the tour leader Cameron Appleton (team Aqua) off. The great achievement’s pleasant side effect: the long-range race within the Championship-Tour as DHL-Trophy is valuated higher; this means that the points are doubled in the fleet race determintation. The red-white-red team sailed once again as 8th and 10th place with the remaining syndicates and gained new self-confidence. As well as the day before the last day and on the last day of the Bank Sarasin RC 44 Portoroz Cup the local Austrian team made a great impression on 6th and 8th place. After altogether ten races the local team is happy about making it to 9th place. Now they need the necessary stability in training to achieve high places in the goal. The successful experience in the long-range and generally in the fleet races were very important for the moral of the troop, especially the Austrians being the only amateur team to sail in the tour. Even though the New Zealand AC pros were leading in the fleet race, Paul Cayard and the Americans won the match race. Dean Barker and his team Artemis sent Ray Davies with No Way Back and Russell Coutts (BMW Oracle Racing) off. RC 44 Austria Cup 2010- Event Contract signed! Austria was able to achieve a great success on the outskirts of Portoroz-regatta: the Traunsee and Gmunden are on the 2010 tour-calendar and are invited for the third time in a row to the Salzkammergut from 29.April to 4.May. The contract was signed yesterday and the excitement is very big, mainly because the rivals increase yearly. Copenhagen is confirmed as a newcomer. Miami and further top-places are pushing into the elite round. The Traunsee can be proud of its international top sailing destination. Beside the athletic components also economic and touristic factors play a big role for the Austrians in this international event. In the region of Upper Austria, today´s TV pictures were broadcasted in 140 countries. In May the region booked 9000 accommodations. The season´s final of the RC 44 Championship tour 2009 will take place in Dubai from 25-29 November. The kick off of the Championship tour 2010 will also take place in Dubai in February. After that they will move the races to Europe in Gmunden and the Traunsee, then Copenhagen and Malcsesine and the rest of the calendar is still open. Bank Sarasin RC 44 Portoroz Cup, 30.
